Lore & Background

McQuarrie co-wrote the screenplay for *The Final Reckoning* with Erik Jendresen. In January 2019, Tom Cruise announced that McQuarrie would write and direct both the seventh and eighth Mission: Impossible films, which were to be shot back-to-back. However, by February 2021, Paramount decided not to move forward with that plan. McQuarrie was in the process of rewriting the film's script by November 2021. Principal photography began in March 2022, was suspended in July 2023 due to the SAG-AFTRA strike, resumed in March 2024, and concluded in November. Filming locations included England, Malta, Norway and South Africa. The subtitle was changed from *Dead Reckoning Part Two* in November 2024.

In Their Own Story

McQuarrie co-wrote the script for *The Final Reckoning*, which follows Ethan Hunt and his IMF team as they continue their mission to prevent the Entity, a rogue artificial intelligence, from destroying all of humanity. The film's plot involves retrieving the "Podkova" module from the sunken Russian submarine *Sevastopol*, a chase in biplanes, and a mid-air insertion of the Poison Pill into the Podkova. McQuarrie also appears in a cameo at the end of the film.
